http://www.davefolsom.net/?p=2340 Learning to Write Fiction – I confess to writing my first fiction short story in my teens a good many years ago. That first effort found its way to the trash in fairly short order. After that initial attempt the writing bug laid dormant a number of years filled with marriage and child rearing. That settled, I found time on my hands. After taking a couple creative writing courses, the bug rose to the surface again. Its been with me off and on since. The next few years left me with a box full of short stories and a matching box of rejection letters. My writing instructor suggested I turn one of those short stories into a novel. Continue reading

New Book this Spring – Finding Jennifer

The premise follow our southern border problem and how easily innocent Americans can be unwittingly drawn into the danger. Writing Efforts

http://www.davefolsom.net/?p=892 Writing is mostly a solitary effort, mixed with time spend plotting, imagining, researching and generally gazing out the window. It is during this period that I find it strangely difficult to convince those around me, my spouse, friends, acquaintances and sometimes even the dog, that I am, indeed, hard at work. I usually spend the first hours defining what I’m going to write, i.e., blog, short story, essay, or a start a new novel. Once I’ve made that decision, there are more decisions on characters, plot line, format, and most important the first two or three lines that should grab the reader, such as, It was a dark and stormy night, raining, drowning the lonely man as he stumbled along the street, etc. These first clumsy attempts are followed by more strikethroughs and editing until finally we end up with:
